0094 Cynara cardunculus var. altilis

Asteraceae, Compositae: Cynara cardunculus L. subsp. cardunculus var. altilis DC. España/Spain: Valencia. Izq./Left: Catarroja-Albal, plantas asilvestradas / Naturalized plants, 18.06.2006. Der./Right: Valencia, Jardín Botánico / Botanic Garden of Valencia, 25.06.2006. ©E. Laguna.

A cultivated plant, obtained after domestication of one or more wild varieties of C. cardunculus, but not coming from the same parentals of the globe artichoke, var. scolymus (L.) Fiori (=C. scolymus L.). Recent research shows that var. altilis was probably domesticated during the Medium Age and Arab period in Southern Spain, maybe using or crossing the Spanish native C. cardunculus subsp. flavescens Wilklund; on the contrary, var. scolymus could be domesticated during the Roman Age, using the central and Western Mediterranean C. cardunculus var. sylvestris (Lam.) Fiori
